HBM Chapter 20

The Electrical Affinity of the Essential Self and the Machine

The relationship between the essential self and the machine is based on a seduction, an affinity – electrical in nature – between their electrical fields. Evolution thus means the transformation of the electrical field of the essential self in such a way as to free it from its affinity.

Here, once again we get from Gold an objective definition  – an electro-mechanical definition as it were – of what transformation in fact is. We understand from the bulk of spiritual literature that the aspirant is always working to free themselves from their bodily hungers, from pride, from the so-called Seven deadly sins. Okay, what actually is the mechanics of that process known as “free oneself from.”?

We are an essential self housed in a historical personality. We have learned that to survive, we must do many things. Where do we learn these tricks? From those around us, we learn them when we are very young. They seem to work for those around us. As we grow older, we see that those tools are really not needed any longer.

When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. I Corinthians 13:11

I have always loved this quote. But, the process called “I put away childish things” is not as easy as it seems. That is where this chapter begins. We start to free the essential self from its electrical affinity with the historical personality. We start to free ourselves from When I was a Child.
