The Joy of Sacrifice

Introduction to the Joy of Sacrifice

The Joy of Sacrifice is a book written by E.J. Gold. Parts of the book were published in 1974 under the title of The Book of Sacrifices.

“How can one bring oneself to make the first self-initiated sacrifice, that of comfort? One can work in a group, and in this way the group will serve as one’s work will until one has a will of one’s own.”                                   Joy of Sacrifice, page 49

We are generally not beginners on the path if we have found our way to this page. So the work for us at this point is an effort to seek ways and means of making additional steps on the path. We are haunted by the question of what does it mean to be on the Path? Am I on the path now, is this effort in harmony with my goal of inner growth?

When those questions no longer bother you, fear that moment.

We will conduct an online reading of the Joy of Sacrifice. It will involve the “slow-reading” method. We will proceed at the pace of the group.

The first 142 pages of the book serve as an introduction to the Sacrifices. Our online work will focus on the nineteen sacrifices. For a list of the Sacrifices go here.

As you read the list which one or one’s made you recoil with distaste? Look carefully at that those.

The class will treat the first 142 pages as an extended introduction. We will cover those pages in the first two weeks of the class. We will then move rapidly through the 19 sacrifices. Read the material before the class – come with an offering for the class. An example of your work.
